(WSLS 10) - Sweet Briar College celebrates National Engineers Week today. The school will host a session with high school girls from the region, introducing them to engineering. That is followed by a banquet. This is the second year the school has held the banquet, which brings together industry profession, high school and college students and business leaders.
A historian and American Civil War Museum volunteer will talk about life and writings of Mark Twain. Twain joined the Confederate Missouri Militia in 1861. The historian will talk about how long he stayed and the influence his service had on his writing. A reception begins at 6:30 with the presentation at 7 p.m at the Museum of the Confederacy-Appomattox. It's $10 for adults with members getting for $5.

The city of Lynchburg holds an open house and informational meeting about the Wards Ferry Road, Logans Lane widening project. City staff will answer questions and hear concerns from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. today at Heritage High School.
Nursing students at Radford host the New River Valley Senior Health Fair today. Nursing students and people from more than 30 community health organizations will perform screenings and offer guidance. The fair runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Christiansburg Recreation Center.
Carilion Clinic holds a community forum tonight at seven to talk about plans for the former Shenandoah Life property in Roanoke. Carilion plans to move some of its non-clinical services into the building. It has also agreed to sell part of the property to Berkley Hall Companies for development, possibly into apartments.
The Roanoke County School Board will vote on approving a contract for renovations to the field at William Byrd High School. FieldTurf USA has proposed a $1.4 million contract to install the synthetic field surface and a new rubber track for the stadium. Work is scheduled to be finished by August 1st.
