Family safe after morning house fire in Roanoke County

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Roanoke County Fire & Rescue crews battled a fire in the 1800 block of Bridle Lane at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When the first crews arrived they reported smoke coming from the back of a split level house. Fire crews were able to contain the flames to the attic area of the house. The house has smoke and water damage throughout.

Crews say a couple and three teens lived in the home along with their dog and all escaped without injury.

One of the occupants woke up to the smell of smoke and was able to alert the others. Officials say there were smoke alarms in the home but they did not activate.

The Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that improperly discarded smoking material was the cause of this fire and damage estimates are $30,000.
