Martinsville City Council discussing possibility of expanding city's MINet

MARTINSVILLE (WSLS 10) - The Martinsville City Council is discussing the feasibility of bringing faster internet to those living in the city.

The city currently offers a high-speed internet service called MINet to businesses and organizations in the city.

But, the city's telecommunications director, Mike Scaffidi, said an increasing number of residents are calling and asking for the service.

He said in the past, expanding the service has been discussed and was found to be too expensive, but with demand increasing, he is now discussing with council cheaper ways to possibly expand the service.

"We looked at some wireless options. However, we did a small design but we are not confident that it's going to work. So, we're going to continue to explore that and maybe present that to council," Scaffidi explained.

He said council has not indicated if or when a decision may be made.
