Driver charged in connection to fatal Bland County pedestrian crash

BLAND COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Two women are dead and a third injured after a crash in Bland County on Monday morning.

Late on Monday, police charged 27-year-old Alex B. Nunley with three felony counts of hit-and-run, one count of reckless driving and one count of failure to report an accident.

Virginia State Police say that at 8:40 a.m., three women were on their daily morning walk, walking east along the westbound lane in the 2100 block of Wilderness Road when they heard a vehicle approaching.

As a 1993 Ford Thunderbird approached them in the westbound lane, police say they moved single-file into the ditch line, but the Thunderbird ran off the right side of the road and into the ditch line.

The first woman was able to jump out of the vehicle's path, but the next two women, Connie M. DeHart, 69, and Frances E. Burgess, 66, were struck and both died at the scene, according to police.

The first woman was treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Further investigation led the Bland County Sheriff's Office to a residence on Hungry Hollow Road in the Holly Brook community of Bland County. The deputies located the Ford Thunderbird and Nunley was taken in custody without incident.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
