3-year-old boy dies, others injured in Carroll County crash

CARROLL COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A 3-year-old Statesville, N.C. boy died in a tractor-trailer crash in Carroll County on Sunday night.

Two tractor-trailers traveling north on I-77 began changing lanes at the same time and a 1999 tractor-trailer struck the rear of a 2000 tractor-trailer at mile marker 2 at 10:45 p.m., according to Virginia State Police.

Police say the driver of the 1999 tractor-trailer, Rashida N. Parks, 22, of Statesville, N.C., was transported to Wake Forest-Baptist Hospital, for treatment of serious injuries while her 3-year-old son, Vince, was not secured in a child safety seat and was ejected from the tractor-trailer during the crash. He was transported to Northern Hospital in Mt. Airy, N.C., where he later died.

The driver of the 2000 tractor-trailer, Harry M. Shuler, 50, of South Carolina, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation at this time. The Virginia State Police Motor Carrier Safety Team is assisting with the investigation.

Charges are pending.
