(WSLS 10) – R. S. Payne Elementary School in Lynchburg celebrates I Love Math Day. Nearly twenty people from the community will talk to the third through fifth graders about how they use math in their professions. They will also take part in games and hands-on activities. WSLS 10’s Kristina Montuori will speak to students this morning.

Jefferson College of Health Sciences holds an information session today about its Family Nurse Practitioner program. The session begins at 4 p.m. at the school.

The Christiansburg Police Department and Montgomery County Sherriff’s Office will launch a new safe exchange zone. It will address safety concerns with child custody exchanges and online transactions from sites like Craigslist and eBay. The site will be located in the parking lot behind the Sheriff’s Office.

A new bakery opens in downtown Roanoke. Fresh Baked Bakery will celebrate its grand opening at its Jefferson Street location. The bakers offers things like cookies, cupcakes, pies and brownies and can custom make cakes for special occasions and weddings.

The Virginia Senate is scheduled to vote on House Joint Resolution 693 today. Passage of resolution is the first stop in protecting transportation funds. It calls for a constitutional amendment, allowing money set aside for transportation to only be used for that purpose and not reallocated to other government services. If it passes, the bill will have to be voted on again next year before then going to voters.
