FreightCar America announces Roanoke layoffs

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – FreightCar America has announced layoffs are planned for employees at its Roanoke plant.

Workers have been notified, but FreightCar America did not follow typical protocol for the announcement that other companies usually follow, which includes notifying the city, according to Roanoke City Mayor Sherman Lea.

Lea said the city was not notified directly by the company.

“We should have been notified that night,” explained Lea.

Lea said that the city will use the Virginia Employment Commission, as well as local job placement organizations to help employees affected by the layoff.

FreightCar America declined to comment on the matter.
