Dig continues, DNA evidence will be introduced in Lyon sisters murder trial

THAXTON (WSLS 10) - A document filed in Bedford County Circuit Court shows the commonwealth will be introducing DNA evidence in the Lloyd Welch murder trial. He's accused of the 1975 murders of the Lyon sisters.

According to court documents, investigators found DNA evidence in a Hyattsville, Maryland basement. Welch told investigators one of the girls was killed and dismembered in that basement.

Investigators resumed digging on Taylor's Mountain Road in Thaxton this week.

Investigators with the Bedford County Sheriff's Office and other agencies were back on the property on Thursday, digging and sifting through the dirt.

This is the same piece of property that investigators, including FBI agents have searched in the past for evidence in this case, looking for any trace of Katherine and Shelia Lyon.

Investigators were there with shovels and picks, digging through a bottom portion of the property near the road. Local fire departments were there to provide water so they could sift through the dirt.

All agencies involved would not speak to the public about what they were doing or what they were searching for exactly. All of those who are involved in the case are under court gag order, which prohibits them from giving out any details related to the case to the public.

At this time, it's unclear if this dig, or what may or may not be found, will result in either side of this case asking for a delay in trial.
