Mill Mountain Zoo is WSLS 10's February 3° Charity

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -  As we kick off a new month, Storm Team 10 also changes its 3° Charity.

Money raised in February will go to the Mill Mountain Zoo.

We visited the animals and their keepers to find out what the donation means for the struggling non-profit.

It may be the dead of winter, but it's a new season for the zoo.

As we've reported, the Roanoke staple is moving in a new direction, setting itself apart from other zoos within driving distance.

"Each zoo, I guess the best way to put it, is a different type of flavor of ice cream so to speak," explained Bill Baker, Co-Director of Mill Mountain Zoo.

Baker says Mill Mountain's new flavor is a local one.

"Our ultimate goal is to move toward native animals to the region of Appalachia and Virginia," Baker explained. "This is something that we knew we needed to take the zoo in a fresh new direction and reinvent ourselves, re-brand and so that's really what we're doing."

Money raised through our 3° Charity program will help the zoo move in its new direction.

While Bali the leopard is a fan favorite, Baker hopes to add some commonly recognized animals like bald eagles and black bears.

The WSLS 10 3° donation will help pay for those future exhibits.

As a non-profit, Baker said it's encouraging when area businesses and zoo patrons choose to support the cause.

"It's moments like this that we know that the community is with us, so we can't thank you enough," Baker said.

A thank you on behalf of the zoo staff and stars like Bali.
