Halifax County's upcoming budget could include property tax increase

HALIFAX COUNTY (WSLS 10) - People living in Halifax County could see a significant property tax increase in the upcoming budget year.

Initial requests submitted this week by departments would put the county $1.4 million over budget.

$1.2 million of that amount comes from the school district.

County Administrator Jim Halasz said every one cent in property tax increase would generate about $370,000.

He emphasized that the county is still in the preliminary stages of developing the budget, but even if cuts are made, the county may not be able to avoid raising taxes.

"If somebody challenged us to find $100,000 or $200,000, we could probably do that. If we were to try to find $1.4 million or a number of that magnitude, we would be cutting whole departments and people would lose their jobs," explained Halasz.

The next budget work session will be held on March 6.
