New numbers show Southside population declining despite economic growth

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Colleen Richardson owns A La Carte Home Décor in downtown Danville.

She was surprised to hear that new numbers from the University of Virginia show Danville and Pittsylvania County's populations are declining.

"I haven't seen any indication that business is drying up in Danville," Richardson pointed out.

Downtown Danville is where much of the city's growth is occurring.

But, Richardson said even if the area as a whole is declining, that's not too concerning because she believes the city's commitment to growing the downtown area will outweigh the decline.

"We're really excited about what the city of Danville is doing in the downtown area. There's lots of new restaurants coming, so we feel like it's a great time to have a new business," explained Richardson.

County officials in Henry and Pittsylvania County are not surprised by the population decline.

Deputy Henry County Administrator Dale Wagoner said it could be a factor as the county develops its budget for the upcoming fiscal year.

"Fewer people live here, house values go down and as such our reassessment is down this year somewhat so we'll have to address it," Wagoner explained.

Pittsylvania County Economic Development Director Matt Rowe said property values could be where the impact is felt the most for the county, but says the population decline doesn't represent all of the growth taking place.

"I feel like that we're growing the business space in the county, for sure. Typically, that will ultimately result, as far as true population growth, more folks coming to the area," Rowe said.

Both Wagoner and Rowe said they are optimistic about their county's futures.
