ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A bill that would change the model of public school has been tabled.

Delegate Sam Rasoul introduced House Bill 2434 that would bring a community school approach into the classroom. The pilot program would be based on what needs are in the area.

"Schools become the center of services not just a place for education so imagine a kid going and getting dental care at the school, getting social services, mental health support," said Del. Rasoul. "This is a very different approach to our long-term planning of our schools being that hub of services."

He says with the conversation started they are planning meetings and talking with some national groups about how to move forward and possibly start the trend in the Commonwealth.

The Coalition for Community Schools acknowledges three main areas of implementation according to Delegate Rasoul:

· Provide expanded leaning opportunities that are motivating and engaging during the day, after school, and in the summer

· Offer essential health and support services

· Engage families and communities as assets in the lives of their children and youth
