EGGLESTON (WSLS 10) - Virginia State Police are investigating a non-fatal officer-involved shooting in Giles County.
It happened Thursday morning at about 7:30 in Eggleston in the 2200 block of Guinea Mountain Road as police and a volunteer fire department were responding to a call about a fire.
The Giles County Sheriff's Office received a call from a private security company concerning a potential fire at the residence. The local fire department was dispatched along with deputies to the residence.
Two deputies and an Eggleston volunteer firefighter were the first to arrive on the scene.
State police say when the three arrived, a man came out with a large knife and despite repeated verbal attempts to get him to drop the weapon, he refused and "advanced toward the deputies."  The man was described as "combative" toward the deputies.
The man was flown to Roanoke Memorial hospital with what were described as life-threatening injuries.
After the shooting, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and save the home.
"Flames had already came through the window at the front of the house and through the living room window. We were able to go in and contain it to that one room," Eggleston Volunteer Fire Department Chief Billy Griggs said.
Griggs said Thursday was not the first time the homes security system had detected a fire. In fact, Griggs estimates in the past six to eight months they've been called out to the home 10 times. Despite other calls, Thursday's fire was the first fire at the home.
He says the fire was burning unusually hot.
"We had the fire out for about 45 minutes or so and it was still 150 degrees or more. You feel it through your turnout gear. That's pretty hot," Griggs said.
Thankful none of his crew members were injured, Griggs said this is just another example of how security continues to be a concern for first responders.
"It is the way things are going today. You really need to pay attention to the things that are going on around you," said Griggs. He also said he would even consider purchasing more safety gear like bulletproof vests for the department if they could afford it.
" I am thankful no one else was hurt. It could have been a whole lot worse considering what we went into," Griggs said.
In a statement, Giles County Sheriff Morgan Millirons said both deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave. Millirons said the names of the deputies involved will not be released during the investigation.
No deputies or other first responders were hurt during the incident. Fire crews are still working to determine what started the fire.

UPDATE: Sheriff's office confirms the incident started at 7:25 a.m. in Pearisburg.
According to Virginia State Police, a deputy was responding to a house fire at 2271 Guinea Mountain Road.
Police say, when the deputy arrived, a man tried to attack him with a knife. The deputy then shot the man.
The man was then taken by helicopter to a local hospital for treatment.
GILES COUNTY (WSLS 10) - The Giles County Sheriff's Department confirms that there is an officer-involved shooting near the scene of a house fire.
Deputies say it happened this morning on Guinea Mountain Road in Eggleston.
Deputies also confirm a house fire in the vicinity, and fire crews are actively working.
