Plans moving forward for Tinker Creek Greenway Trail expansion

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The Tinker Creek Greenway Trail is one step closer to expansion.

On Monday, the Roanoke City Council agreed to accept state funding to help with construction of the second phase of the project.

The proposed plan includes nearly $1.5 million from the Virginia Department of Transportation to connect the trail from Wise Avenue to Masons Mill Park and eventually to the proposed Deschutes Brewery site.

"To bring this greenway along is wonderful and then to connect to the Deschutes site, that's just the first leg eventually that will go to Carvins Cove and connect to Botetourt County where Ballast Point is," said Chris Morrill, Roanoke City manager.

City leaders hope to begin construction on the expansion project by 2018.
