One person killed in Amherst County crash, weather a factor said police

Roanoke (WSLS 10 ) - On Saturday at 9:49 a.m. Virginia State Police responded to a three-vehicle crash in Amherst County that left one person dead. The crash occurred on South Five Forks Road at Daffodil Lane.

According to police, a 1999 Ford F-250 was traveling south on South Five Forks Road when it crossed the centerline and struck a northbound 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe. The impact of the crash caused the Tahoe to strike the guardrail. Meanwhile, the F-250 pickup went back into the southbound lane where it collided with a 2000 Nissan Maxima. Officials say it was raining at the time of the crash and road conditions were hazardous. The crash occurred on a bridge that was becoming icy.

The driver of the Ford F-250, a 17-year-old Monroe, Va., resident, was charged with driving too fast for road conditions. He was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the crash. The driver of the Tahoe, Larry S. McCauley, 71, of Madison Heights, Va., was transported from the scene by ambulance and declared deceased upon arrival at the hospital. The driver of the Nissan, a 17-year-old Monroe, Va., resident was not injured in the crash. He was wearing a seat belt and was charged with driving too fast for road conditions.

The crash remains under investigation.
