(WSLS 10) – The man charged in a deadly shooting in Henry County returns to court today for a competency review. According to the Henry County Commonwealth’s Attorney, the judge ordered Benjamin Tovar to receive treatment at an in-patient psychiatric hospital. Tovar is charged with second degree murder in the death of his co-worker at Knight’s Inn in Collinsville.

Head to downtown Roanoke Friday night for the final week of Dickens of a Christmas. Bring your furry friend for the Pet Costume Contest. Registration starts at 5:30 with the contest at 6:30. I will serve as one of the judges. Also, the Snow Zone returns. Snow will cover Salem Avenue in front of the Taubman Museum of Art.

The Lynchburg Humane Society continues its push to get 600 pets adopted during the last two months of the year. Today through Sunday, the society holds its “Twas the Weekend Before Christmas” Special. Adoptions will be $25 or less.

Virginia ABC and Botetourt County Schools kicks off the BOLT series today. The Being Outstanding Leaders Together Against Drugs and Alcohol program is for middle schoolers. It encourages community conversations about the dangers and provides opportunities for high school students to exercise leadership skills.

Danville Utilities issues a peak power alert for this morning. Power customers are asked to conserve this morning between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. Alerts are issued when demand is expected to be high. Transmission charges are set, in part, during these high demand periods. You can reduce power usage by lowering your thermostat, avoid using your dishwasher or doing laundry and using less hot water.
