Social media connects woman with Queen Creek nurse who saved her life in store

Monique Greigo, KPNX – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (KPNX) - It was supposed to be a quick trip to the grocery store.

"I always go to Safeway but I was like, ‘I'll just go to Albertsons today,'" said Gloria Beasinger.

A split-second decision, Beasinger never imagined would have a life-or-death impact.

"I wasn't even looking to the left and I hear this guy say, ‘What's wrong, honey, what's wrong? Tell to me what's wrong'," Beasinger told 12 News.

"I looked over and he's holding her," she said.

Beasinger was shopping in the back of the store near the meat department when she saw another customer collapse and go into medical distress.

A certified nurse, she rushed to help.

"She had a really weak pulse, she wasn't breathing. Her teeth were clamped and her eyes were rolled back," Beasinger said when asked about the condition the woman was in.

"Completely unresponsive. I mean, she was stiff."

That's when her instincts kick in.

"For one, it's the first time I had ever done CPR on a person in that type of situation," she said.

While Beasinger has been a nurse for more than four years, up until that moment, she'd never found herself in an emergency situation where it was up to her and only her to save someone's life.

On the phone with 911, she began giving the woman CPR in the middle of the grocery store aisle.

"I kept looking at her waiting for her to respond but she wasn't," said Beasinger.

She continued working on the woman until paramedics arrived and rushed her to the hospital.

Beasinger says the reality of what happened didn't hit her until after she left the store.

"It just kind of hit me that this is a life that hopefully I saved," she told 12 News.

That was a little more than a week ago.

Not knowing who the woman was, Beasinger had no idea whether she'd survived or how to find out.

"It really struck me," she said. "I wanted to know who she was but I didn't want to go to far as to invade her privacy, her family and whatever they were going through whether she made it or not."

Then she saw a post on a Queen Creek Community page on Facebook.

In it, a user named Barabra Gonzalez was asking if anyone knew the nurse who'd saved her life after she had a heart attack at the grocery store.

"It was just an amazing relief and I started crying," Beasinger said about learning the woman was alive.

The women messaged back and forth.

No longer strangers, they're now bonded by one life-changing moment they'll never forget.

"Just seeing all the people that responded to it (the post)," Beasinger said, "Her boyfriend and her friends messaged me as well saying, ‘Thank you for keeping this woman in our life because she means so much to us.'"

Beasinger and Gonzalez are now planning to meet in person.

12 News reached out to Gonzalez but did not hear back until later Monday evening.
