According to police spokeswoman Kristin Mumford, officers knocked on a motel door and made entry.

"As they were checking the bathroom, shots were fired toward them," Mumford said. "They didn't see the individual and they returned fire and left the room."

An East Precinct officer was shot in the shoulder and was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The officer's identity has not been released.

The suspect remains barricaded inside a room at the motel. Police could be heard telling the suspect to come out with his hands up and he will be unharmed.

"We are still making efforts to make contact with the suspected gunman inside the Cumberland Inn and those efforts are continuing as we speak," Mumford said.

A witness on the scene said his girlfriend is staying at the Cumberland Inn and that the motel has been evacuated.

A portion of East Trinity Lane is closed as police and remains on the scene.

The SWAT team is also assisting.

Metro police are expected to hold a news conference later Tuesday with additional information.
