Golden Eagles Single Wing Ready For State Final 'Flight'

Moneta (WSLS-10 SPORTS) -  "We talked all year how close it was how close it was but it's right there where we can grab it now but we got to earn it, "explained Staunton River head coach Chuck Poston to his squad, two days before they would play in their first state football championship game.

Staunton River's 2016 team is going where no Golden Eagles squad has before.  At 13-1 they've already won more games, and advanced further than any other--in school history.

But the state championship awaits--one victory away this Saturday.

"Obviously all that stuff has been phenomenal, it's been really nice but for the kids and myself it's just about trying to just be 1-0 at the end of the week.  Have a good practices and be as prepared as we can be for a Blacksburg team that is just rolling right now and is very good. So we just try to keep the kids just focused on today just what we're doing today," says Poston.

"Fear the wing" is the cry as the Golden Eagles have rushed for more than 6000 yards in 2016--in the single wing offense.

Led by junior star Grayson Overstreet, who has set a state single season record for points scored.  The wing has averaged more than 52 points per game this season.

"Yeah we're really tight knit like last year we got to know everybody really well last year. And we're really just meshing and even more since we've been playing since we were so little and the offense is just making more sense than it did last year.  We're just getting our blocks down doing our assignments and we can trust everybody to the left and right of us for their assignments too," says Staunton River center Patrick Esarey.

"Yeah I knew we'd be good but I never imagined anything like this is just a blessing I'm just grateful for it," says Golden Eagles Tight End Same Kirtley.

The Golden Eagles are set to kick it off against Blacksburg at noon Saturday at William & Mary in Williamsburg.
