Blacksburg Preps for State Finals

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10 SPORTS) -

They have been the Cinderella story on the high school gridiron this season and this Saturday the Bruins are hoping to make the most of their opportunity of bringing home state championship gold.

The team practiced at Virginia Tech's indoor facility on Wednesday as a way to focus on Saturday's matchup. Blacksburg started the season at just 2-4 but since then they've only lost one game and have simply taken care of business in the postseason scoring a combined 169 points. Saturday they will face one of the more disciplined teams in the area in Staunton River. The Golden Eagles eliminated the Bruins a season ago in the first round, so they may have lost the battle but they're hoping to win the war. The Bruins are relying on their familiarity with the single wing to help them in the championship game.

"While this is still an extremely hard offense to stop my kids have been seeing this since eighth grade when they played Giles", said head coach Thad Wells.

"This is our fifth time facing it in two years so there's very few teams that see the single wing five times in two years so I'm not saying that will give us the edge but it definitely helps."

Middle Linbebacker Joshua VanGilder added, "We faced them last year and unfortunately got knocked out of the playoffs and I but we're glad that we have them again".

Kickoff is set for Noon on Saturday at William and Mary.
