Emergency access road for Danville neighborhood could soon become a reality

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - An emergency access road for a Danville neighborhood is getting closer to reality.

At Tuesday night's city council work session, council will discuss the possibility of building the road on land next to the Pine Tag neighborhood.

Currently, the only entrance to the neighborhood is along W. Main Street and sometimes it's blocked by broken-down trains.

The access road would run from Corning Drive to Oak Creek Drive.

The land and construction are estimated to cost $500,000, which the city would pull from its general fund.

"First, we've got to get some permitting through because there is one creek crossing," explained Danville City Manager Ken Larking. "That's going to take the most amount of time. Once that's completed, really, things could probably happen in a matter of weeks."

If council decides to move forward with the project, it would likely be placed on the December 20 city council agenda.

Council is also working on the project with the Danville-Pittsylvania County Industrial Authority with the intent that the IDA purchase and own the land and use part of it for future development.
