WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) - A new report finds that Virginia's economy has improved since the end of the Great Recession, but hasn't kept pace with growth nationally and appears to be decelerating.

The 2016 State of the Commonwealth Report released Friday by Old Dominion University's Center for Economic Analysis and Policy predicts Virginia's gross domestic product will grow in 2016, but at a rate of less than 2 percent.

The report also finds that national economic growth is expected to pick up at the end of 2016 and outpace Virginia's through mid-2017.

The report says declining federal spending has been the primary cause of the state's sluggish growth in recent years.

It also finds that economic progress since the end of the recession hasn't been evenly distributed across the Commonwealth, even among metro areas.
