ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Democratic Party of Virginia Chairwoman Susan Swecker released a statement in response to Ryant Washington winning the Democratic nomination for Virginia's 22nd Senatorial District. The seat was left open after Thomas A. Garrett beta Jane Dittmar to win Virginia's 5th congressional district in November.

"Ryant Washington will be a change-maker for Virginia's 22nd Senatorial District by fighting for good-paying jobs, affordable healthcare, education, and other critical issues facing the Commonwealth," said Swecker. "Ryant is a respected public servant with a strong background in public safety with decades of experience in law enforcement as a state trooper, deputy sheriff, and Fluvanna County Sheriff. He's always been a fighter for the people he serves and during his campaign, he'll paint a clear vision for moving the Commonwealth forward."

"I'd also like to commend Katie Webb Cyphert on her hard-fought effort during the caucus. She's been an asset to her community as an educator, and an asset to our Party in Lynchburg - and we look forward to collaborating with her as we gear up for 2017.

The special election will take place on January 10, 2017.
