ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -   Students in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing program at Virginia Heights Elementary School will get special toys today. Roanoke College students modified toys to give them casts and cochlear implants.. To give some of the students "toys like them." The idea came from a course called "Differ Abilities" to give college students insight into the world of someone who is differently abled.

Vinton kicks of the holiday season with a tree lighting ceremony and entertainment at the Vinton Municipal Building at 6 p.m. followed by a parade with more than 100 entries at 7 p.m.  The parade ends at the Vinton War Memorial where you can visit and have pictures taken with Santa while enjoying refreshments and entertainment.

Riverside Park in Lyncyhburg lights up tonight for the first ever Festival of Lights, hosted by Lynchburg Parks and Recreation. It's free to drive through the park and see all the displays from 5:00 - 9:00pm, until January 1. Lynchburg businesses, churches, and organizations are competing for the title of 'Favorite Display'.

The Averett Music Department renews the tradition of "Averett Celebrates Christmas" with a collaboration of student and community performers in a service of readings and carols for the Advent and Christmas Season. It starts at 7:30 p.m. in the Pritchett Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.

Good Samaritan Hospice celebrates the lives of loved ones through its annual Love Light Tree program, which supports end-of-life care in the Roanoke and New River Valleys. Each branch of the trees will be decorated with the names of someone who is being remembered or honored. The Love Light Tree Lighting ceremony is today at New River Valley Mall at 10 a.m. with music, refreshments, and opportunities for fellowship.
