Spartans Winning Tradition Continues Into State Semifinals

Salem (WSLS-10 SPORTS)- Of our area teams still alive for state titles, we have come to expect Salem.

The defending 4A state champs have once again proven themselves worthy of a return trip. With just one more hurdle before they get that chance in the form of 10-2.  The Spartans have won 11 straight after an opening game 2 point loss to Amherst County.  The history is plentiful.   The Spartans program has seven state titles including last year's overtime thriller over Lake Taylor.  Salem has been a playoff team 28 of the past 30 seasons.  Salem has become synonymous with discipline and championships.

"Hey-- we have to play good defense, have to run to the ball and we have to stress them a little.  We have to get them out some things, make them do some things that they don't want to do you.  He (Dominion's quarterback) is dynamic-- so we have to do a good job of running to the football and one guy misses him we need to have three or four more coming that's gonna be the main thing play physical defense and I just play some Salem football," says head Salem coach Stephen Magenbauer.

" I think the advantage is how disciplined we're gonna come in, how prepared we are going to play on offensively and defensively and if we come in--really come in hot on all cylinders defense and offense I think will be completely fine, " says Salem defensive end Vincent Pinello.
