Golden Eagles "Fear the Wing" Into State Semifinals

Moneta (WSLS-10 SPORTS)- Staunton River is one of a half-dozen SW Virginia squads still alive for a state football title.  The Golden Eagles are 12-1 and into the 3A state semis..

They'll get a 10-3 Hopewell team at 3pm Saturday in Moneta.  Staunton River has made the playoffs six times, but this years run is the longest. The Golden Eagles have set a single season record for wins.

Coach Chuck Poston's fourth trip to the playoffs has been bolstered by a team averaging nearly 53 points her game behind the meat grinder that is the single wing.

They are coming off a 55-22 win over top 3A west seed Rustburg, and while they respect visiting Hopewell, they will still do exactly what they do.

"They're a good football team, you don't make it to the semi-finals if you're not. They are big, they have a lot of speed and they are well coached.  But you know we're just gonna keep doing what we do we're going to just keep trying to block and tackle and we'll run the football and play good defense.  If you can do those things that you got a chance to win a football game, " explains coach Chuck Poston.

"They're a pretty big team but and I guess they play physical but we're physical too, we are a physical football team--should be a good game, " says Golden Eagles running back Kalip Jones,
