Blacksburg Police Department looking to get new station

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) – Plans are in the works for a new police station in Blacksburg as the department has nearly doubled in size since the original building was built in the 1980s.

The Blacksburg Town Council has a new station high on its capital improvement project list, although construction likely would not begin for another three to four years.

The estimated cost is around $16.5 million. Leaders said in order to pay for the project, they will consider a possible property tax increase, but no decisions have been made on that yet.

“An improvement that we really need that has jumped out at us is a new police station,” said Mayor Ron Rordam. “It is just bursting at the seams. There are officers working out of what once were closets and storage buildings.”

No plans have been made for location or future use of the current building.
