Home for the Holidays build kicks off in Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Work is underway for the third annual Home for the Holidays build.

Despite the rain, dozens of Habitat for Humanity volunteers were on hand in Lynchburg for day one.

The day started with just the foundation and sub-floor.

Volunteers put in a lot of work in just a few hours to get the walls up.

Working in the pouring rain Executive Director Donna Vincent said is a testament to the type of volunteers the non-profit has.

"You can't contain them," said Vincent. "If we put out a plea at midnight for help tomorrow morning because something came up, we'd have a dozen people show up eager and ready to help."

:This is a brand-new house," said homeowner, Kennesha Hopkins. "Nobody has ever lived in it. I'll be the first, me and my kids. I'm just thankful, blessed."

Hopkins says getting to know the volunteers and working alongside them has been her favorite part of day one.
