Security guard killed in Virginia parking lot

YORK, Va, (WAVY) – Deputies are investigating a murder in the 1200 block of George Washington Memorial Highway, in York County where they say a security guard died after being shot early Thursday morning.

The victim has been identified as 42 year old, Richard Irvin.

The guard was escorting a man from at event at the County Grill when the man shot him, according to Lieutenant Dennis Ivey, a spokesperson for the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office.

All lanes of George Washington Memorial Highway are shut down from Coventry Boulevard to the Newport News line while deputies search for the suspect. Ivey said the public is safe, but drivers should avoid the area.

Workers at a nearby Royal Farms gas station told WAVY.com deputies put the store on lockdown.

The security guard’s name has not been released. Deputies have not released a description of the suspect.
