Roanoke Rescue Mission prepares 500 pounds of turkey for Thanksgiving feast

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - When you feed hundreds for Thanksgiving, it takes dozens of volunteers rolling up their sleeves.

The kitchen at the Roanoke Rescue Mission is packed with people preparing 500 pounds of turkey for Thursday's feast.

Staff said there's no telling how many they'll feed for Thanksgiving, but in years past as many as 1,000 have showed up to eat.

One man offered to volunteer after the mission helped him.

"I was in the program down here a few years back and they really helped me a whole lot, they really did. And I always said to myself, 'when I leave, if they ever need me for anything that I was going to come back,'" explained Tony Warren.

Volunteers prepped all the fixings Wednesday and will cook them Thursday so they're fresh for guests.

Dinner for the public starts at 1 p.m.
