Discussion continues about how to focus more on juvenile crime in Danville

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Danville's police chief and juvenile detention home director are discussing ideas about how to help further reduce juvenile crime.

It's something Chief Philip A. Broadfoot said needs to be focused on more in an effort to reduce violent crime in the city.

Last week's homicides were discussed during the regular, weekly staff meeting this week between the police chief and the detention home director.

A 15-year-old was shot and killed Thursday night and a 14 and 17-year-old were shot Friday night.

A 21-year-old was also killed in that shooting.

Broadfoot said the detention home's director has pledged to help out in the community in any way she can.

But, he said whether the detention home's resources could be used to help kids in the community rather than used solely for dealing with kids once they end up in the home is not clear yet, but he is keeping an open mind.

"We haven't been able to pinpoint exactly what they can do, but it's certainly possible that they can do that," Broadfoot said.

"It's very, very hard for the staff at the detention home to affect something on the outside of the detention home. Their mission and goal is to affect the children who come to them," he continued.

As of Wednesday, both shooting incidents remained under investigation.

No suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made.
