Deadly Chattanooga school bus crash: The young victims

Heather Pelat, Media General – CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (MEDIA GENERAL) -- Five young lives were lost when a school bus carrying 37 students from Woodmore Elementary School in Chattanooga crashed on Monday afternoon.

Dr. Kirk Kelly, the interim superintendent of Hamilton County Schools, said three of the children who died were in the fourth grade, one was in first grade and another in kindergarten.

The entire country is mourning the lives lost far too soon.

D'Myunn Brown, 6

D'Myunn Brown, 6, was in first grade at Woodmore Elementary School.

His great-grandparents, Robert and Wilfred Bray, described him as a shy boy who opened up once he got to know people.

Robert Bray told WKRN in Nashville it's hard for him sleep because every time he closes his eyes, images of D'Myunn appear.

"I just see him, you know, take a look at the time I spent with him… how playful and how happy he was," he said.

"He was a sweet baby, precious little kid," Wildfred Bray added.

Cordayja Jones, 9

Cordayja Jones, 9, was in fourth grade at Woodmore Elementary School. She died just three weeks before her 10th birthday.

According to family members, she had a smile that could light up a room.

"That smile. She's always smiling, always smiling, always smiling. I know she's in heaven right now smiling, so we're good. It's going to be alright," cousin Edward Stoutemire told WKRN.

Zyanna Harris, 10

Zyanna Harris, 10, was in fourth grade at Woodmore Elementary School.

"She was a sweet, outgoing, cheerful young lady and [loved] to dance," family member Tanasha Foster told WKRN. "[I'm] just trying to hold up and keep it together."

Zyaira Mateen, 6

Zyaira Mateen, 6, was among the youngest Woodmore Elementary School students killed.

Her two sisters were also on the school bus but survived.

Zyaira's mother Jasmine Mateen told WSB-TV she is heartbroken but trying to stay strong.

"She was always, always doing something silly to make you laugh, make you feel loved," Mateen said of Zyaira.

Zoie Nash, 9

Zoie Nash, 9, was in fourth grade at Woodmore Elementary School.

Her uncle, Antwon McClain, told the Chattanooga Times Free Press she loved playing softball and was also on a dance team.

She was the only girl in a family of brothers. One brother was injured in the crash but survived.
