More than 3 tons of potatoes donated to White Sulphur Springs

Austin Davis, WVVAGREENBRIER COUNTY (WVVA) - People all over have been dedicated to helping those affected by the June floods, even 5 months removed.  That continued as residents in White Sulphur Springs received a gift right before Thanksgiving.

"An anonymous donor out of the south, a large farmer, has sent us 7,500 pounds of potatoes," said Father Chapin of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

White Sulphur Springs isn't the only city to receive potatoes.

"We just got 4 pallets. He sent 6 tractor-trailer loads of potatoes. So, 7,500 pounds is actually a very small quantity of what's going out throughout West Virginia and the flood area" Father Chapin said.

With over 7,500 pounds of potatoes, there are many ways you can prepare them.

"Potato soup, fried potatoes, mashed potatoes, scallop potatoes, baked potatoes," said White Sulphur Springs resident, Bobby Perry.

"Potato cakes, mashed potatoes, and all kinds of ways. We can even use them in casseroles like for breakfast with sausage and eggs," added Mary Lou Pender, another White Sulphur Springs resident.

Everyone is welcome to take what they need and residents say the donation couldn't have come at a better time.

"I appreciate what he's doing and I'm urging all people to come and take advantage of the blessing that is put out to this community," said Walter Patterson, Sr., White Sulphur Springs resident.

"I just think it's an amazing expression of people's love and concern for West Virginia and we are West Virginia strong and I think this kind of proves it," Father Chapin said.

You can pick up potatoes at 114 E Main Street in White Sulphur Springs, or they will be available at Old White Motors.
