Averett University helping feed those in need in Danville

DANVILLE (WSLS 10) - Students at Averett University are giving back to those in need thanks to a new program.

Every Tuesday, students will pack up the cafeteria's leftover food and take it to Epiphany Episcopal Church just down the street so it can be used for a community meal.

Epiphany's interim rector, Becky Crites, said the church has been able to feed more people in the past few weeks since the program began than it otherwise would have been able to.

"We're trying to not only just offer a warm, hot, cooked meal but also to build relationships in the community," Crites explained.

"We're probably, I think into our third or fourth week of this program launch and to date we're right around 75 to a hundred pounds of donated product," said Michael Moroni, the general manager of Bon Apetite, which services the university and which helped organize the program as part of the company's effort to reduce food waste across the country.

The plan is to continue the program as long as the cafeteria has enough food.

If you would like to contribute food to the community meal, contact the church's office at 434-792-4321.
