What’s News Today: November 21, 2016


(WSLS 10) – One of the men accused of shooting and killing another will be in court today. Police say that Malik Galloway and four other men got into a fight with Damien Ferrell in Henry County in March. Ferrell was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Galloway is charged with first degree murder, robbery and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Damien Farrel of North Carolina is also accused of first degree murder in this case. He goes before a grand jury today.

The man who police say screamed Allah Akbar while stabbing two people at a Roanoke County apartment complex returns to court today. Wasil Farooqui is charged with two counts of aggravated malicious wounding in the August attack. Farooqui told police that he heard voices telling him to attack the victims. The Commonwealth’s Attoney says that a hearing was scheduled for last month, but was delayed because of questions about Farooqui’s mental competency.

Roanoke Valley colleges will work together today to help students understand healthcare educational offerings that are available. Representative at the schools will talk about career options and what it takes to get those jobs. The Within Reach program begins at 6 :30 at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine.

Central Virginia Community College holds an open house today with Virginia Technical Institute. The groups are working together to expand educational opportunities for students wanting to take part in skilled labor certification programs. The open house starts at 3 p.m. at the Region 2000 Workforce Center.

Roanoke City Council holds a public hearing today about zoning changes to the Ivy Market property on Franklin Road. Attorney for the developer say that the idea it to put in a specialty grocery store. The planning commission unanimously approved the changes earlier this month. There is no word on who the grocer is.

After months of construction, the diverging diamond interchange at Valley View Mall will open later today. The City of Roanoke will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning at 10:30. The new lanes are expected to open sometime tonight. This is only the second diverging diamond interchange in the Commonwealth.
