Roanoke Shred-A-Thon collects 185,000 pounds of papers to be destroyed

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – Monday marked the final stop for the WSLS 10 Kodiak Shredding Shred-A-Thon this fall.

The stop in the Star City brought in 185,000 pounds of material to be shredded, the most of any stop this season!

Kodiak Shredding started getting ready for Monday’s stop last week.

“We bring more trucks here and more employees than any of them,” said Chris Gardner with Kodiak.

Roanoke didn’t disappoint.

“It’s 10 years worth of files that I’ve kept in my basement and I refer back to, but I am cleaning house. I’m done with them,” said Tammy Shepherd who brought papers to be shredded.

Shepherd and dozens of people just like her lined up early to get business papers and personal papers destroyed.

“Stuff from my deceased mom and dad, my wife and two brothers and myself. Stuff you’re scared to throw away with identity theft,” said Jason Handy, who also participated in the Shred-A-Thon

Handy said they, like so many others, have hung on to them for too long.

“For the last two years I’ve said ‘we need to do that’ and never have, so I’m paying the price for it today,” continued Handy.

But the price of the free Shred-A-Thon is unbeatable.

“Small businesses, residential Pete, it saves a lot of money. Simply because people who are not financially able to do it, it helps them out,” said Gardner.

Roanoke marks the last stop this year, but people are already planning in anticipation of the next one.

“I’ll be back next time you have one to, to do personal items,” said Shepherd.
