Drumstick Dash events hopes to surpass previous years

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Thousands are getting ready to move their feet so others can eat.

Packet pickup for the annual Drumstick Dash in Roanoke started Monday. The event has grown over the years reaching close to 14,000 participants. Proceeds from the 3.1 mile event help pay for food at the Rescue Mission.

Organizers said last year, more than $251,000 was raised. That's a record they hope to break this year.

"We're hoping that every year that we can do that now since we've broke that record and surpassed that we hope every year now that we can do that with this event," said Uneita Mathews, Drumstick Dash race director .

Organizers are registering walkers and runners through Thursday morning.

WSLS 10 is a proud sponsor of the Thanksgiving Day race, which kicks off at 9 a.m. in downtown Roanoke.
