FLOYD (WSLS 10) – Floyd County is finding new ways to get businesses started and keep them open.

The county just received a $40,000 grant from the state that will be used to help diversify the local economy.

Leaders said there has recently been a strong interest from entrepreneurs in creating food and agriculture businesses.

Right now, 75 percent of Floyd County’s workforce commutes out of the county for work. The hope is that this grant will help change that.

“We’re trying to diversity the economy so it’s not dependent on traditional agriculture,” said economic development director Lydeana Martin.

Floyd County has also invested thousands of dollars in a start-up competition that has helped launch several businesses in the last two years.
