ROANOKE (WSLS 10) -  Read to Me Day is recognized across the country and is a way for the community to celebrate reading in local schools.  The students like reading so much Lincoln Terrace Elementary started new reading programs this year where students can read out loud throughout the day. "One school, one book" gave students the chance to all read the same book and do projects with it.

Thursday's Read to Me Day helps students start their love for reading that can help them in many different subjects and establish a good foundation early on. Lincoln Terrace Instructional Coach Lauren Veck says research shows reading to children out loud has multiple life long benefits like giving kids exposure to more than 30 million words by the age of 3, helping them develop a more extensive vocabulary and making them better writers.

"Our children do not always get to travel very much and get around the world so by exposing them to lots of literature they are traveling through their stories. We love to read out loud," said Veck. "Reading aloud a very simple act that leads to the future educational successes of all of our students."

Community members like workers from Appalachian Power look forward to this event every year.

"It's fun to interact with the kids, it's good to have one on one time with them and to pass on whatever the new book of the year is and to play with them a little bit," said Herbert Coles, Appalachian Power.

WSLS 10's Jenna Zibton read a book called the Ugly Pumpkin that kindergartners and preschool students really enjoyed. They will have a spring event that many schools around the country celebrate Read Across America Day to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
