Child's memory honored with grant to Virginia Museum of Transportation

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Children from low-income families now have a chance to visit the Virginia Museum of Transportation in Roanoke for free.

Wells Fargo has given a grant in the amount of $7,500 to Andrew's Fund for Children at the VMT.

The fund was established in memory of Andrew Hayes McKeever who loved trains and visiting the museum. He passed away unexpectedly just before his 5th birthday. By underwriting admission, the fund enables more children to enjoy the opportunities that Andrew so enjoyed.

"We are very grateful to Wells Fargo for this opportunity to better serve our region," said executive director Beverly T. Fitzpatrick, Jr. "The museum already offers discounted admission for groups, but this fund opens our doors even wider to low-income children."

The money will allow 850 low-income children and adults to visit the museum free of charge when coming with a non-profit or school group.

Director of Development Fran Ferguson said last year there were 10 requests from various groups to allow free admission to low-income students. There have been three so far this season.

"We've had a lot more requests in this community that we haven't been able to honor and of course these organizations that are supporting and helping low-income students, they need to stretch their dollars where they can. So it's just delightful to have the resources to be able to welcome these groups," Ferguson said.
