ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – There are nearly 300 homeless students going to Roanoke City Schools this year. While that number has dropped compared to the same time from previous years there is still work to do.
The United Way RYSE Program helps families out of homelessness. It’s what many people donated to during the summer telethon. The Roanoke City Schools “Help the Homeless Fund” also helps families who need an extra boost.
Right now a painting is up for auction to help raise money for the school run program. Local artist Adam Johnson painted the oil portrait of the Mill Mountain Star. You can bid on the Roanoke City Schools facebook page. As of Tuesday afternoon, the highest bid is $600. You can bid through the Roanoke City School facebook page: www.facebook.com/RoanokeCityPublicSchools
There is also a breakfast with Santa coming up Saturday, December 10th from 9 a.m. to Noon at William Fleming High School to help local homeless children and families. WSLS 10 is a proud sponsor. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for students, and $20 for a family of four. They will accept cash or check the day of the event at the door. Checks need to made out to Roanoke City Public Schools, put Help the Homeless Fund in the memo section.
