Join Santa's Rescue Squad and help seniors in need

LYNCHBURG (WSLS 10) - Although it's still more than a week to Thanksgiving, Home Instead Senior Care is already looking for volunteers to come to the rescue at Christmas.

Ever year, the group asks shoppers to adopt about 1,200 seniors from the Santa to a Senior Tree, but many of those tags are not returned.

This year, leaders came up with the idea for Santa's Rescue Squad, volunteers who specifically help those who are forgotten.

"These are forgotten seniors. These are people who do not have local family who won't get a gift, maybe not a visit through the Christmas season. Our program provides that through the generosity of the people in the Roanoke Valley," said Betsy Head, with Home Instead Senior Care.

Head said Santa's Rescue Squad members will get an email on December 9 with a "forgotten" senior's name and his or her need.

Those volunteers are asked to go shopping over the weekend and return gifts by Monday.
