Officer resigns amid Confederate flag controversy

WPBN – TRAVERSE CITY, Mi. (WPBN) - A Michigan police officer has resigned after sparking controversy by flying a Confederate flag at a "Love Trumps Hate" rally while off-duty.

Traverse City Police Officer Michael Peters resigned Monday, amid an ongoing investigation into his actions.

Traverse City Police Chief Jeff O'Brien said he met with Peters Monday evening, and he submitted his resignation letter. The city manager and city attorney were also at the meeting.

Witnesses say Peters drove up to the Open Space during Friday's anti-Trump rally in a pickup truck, flying a Confederate flag, and an American flag on the back.

Even though Peters has resigned, Traverse City Police are continuing their criminal investigation. They say they have photo evidence that alcohol was involved.
