Plans move forward to bring ‘speciality grocery store’ to Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) – A new grocer is one step closer to coming to the city of Roanoke. On Monday, the Roanoke City Planning Commission unanimously approved zoning changes to the Ivy Market property on Franklin Road. The site is located near the former Ukrop’s.

Attorneys for the developer said the idea is to put a specialty grocery store at the location. In addition, there is space for retail or restaurant use. While the project is expected to move forward, officials are still not releasing the name of the grocer expected to fill the site.

“The specialty grocer is expected to soon make an announcement, we are all excited about that,” said Mary Ellen Goodlatte, attorney for the developer. “I am not at liberty yet to name names but it’s important that the foundation is laid for that grocer to sign a lease and come into the market.”

Now that the planning commission has approved the request, it will be up to the Roanoke City Council to decide if the project moves forward. The council is expected to discuss the plan this month.
