89-year-old Hillsville man dies in Carroll County crash

CARROLL COUNTY (WSLS 10) – Virginia State Police are investigating after a man died in a crash in Carroll County.

The crash happened on Friday at 7:45 a.m., on Route 52, less than a mile north of Route 685.

Police say Alvin E. Howlett of Hillsville was driving south on Route 52, when he attempted to make a left turn. He pulled in front of another driver traveling north.

The oncoming driver, Christy Williams, of Mt. Airy, NC, was unable to brake and avoid the turning vehicle in time.

Howlett was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., where he later died.

Police say Williams was not injured and the crash remains under investigation.
