New visitors center under construction at D-Day Memorial in Bedford

BEDFORD (WSLS 10) -  For the first time since the National D-Day Memorial opened 15 years ago a new building will be built on site to enhance the property.

The current gift shop will be replaced by the new construction.

The building will be the new gift shop and visitors center, replacing the current trailer used on site that was only meant to be temporary.

The D-Day memorial Foundation president April Cheek-Messier says the unique structure will not only have special meaning, but will better serve the site and visitors.

"The visitors center will be put in a period Quonset hut that you would have seen in the 1940's that the soldiers would have seen as they were preparing to go to England. {It's} where they would have stayed. something that will be of tremendous use at the memorial, and very efficient, but also very educational," Cheek-Messier said.

Construction has begun. The site is scheduled to be complete in the spring.
