The building will be the new gift shop and visitors center, replacing the current trailer used on site that was only meant to be temporary.

The D-Day memorial Foundation president April Cheek-Messier says the unique structure will not only have special meaning, but will better serve the site and visitors.

“The visitors center will be put in a period Quonset hut that you would have seen in the 1940’s that the soldiers would have seen as they were preparing to go to England. {It’s} where they would have stayed. something that will be of tremendous use at the memorial, and very efficient, but also very educational,” Cheek-Messier said.

Construction has begun. The site is scheduled to be complete in the spring.
