(WSLS 10) - Ted Talks returns to Virginia Tech today. This is the fifth year of the event, where people will give presentations on the theme of "Spark." Speakers will have 15 minutes to talk about a topic relating to the theme. More than 800 people attended last year.

The Williamson Road Area Business Association and local boy scouts will hold a flag retirement ceremony and Veterans Appreciation Celebration today. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. at Fire Station Number 3. Mission BBQ will provide refreshments. A seperate flag retirement ceremony takes place starting at 6 p.m. at Thrasher Memorial united Methodist Church in Vinton.

The Virginia Western Community College Educational Foundation holds an information session about the Community College Access Program tonight. The program makes tuition free for students with a certain grade point average who meet financial requirements. Tonight's meeting takes place at William Byrd High School starting at 6 p.m.

Lynchburg Parks and Recreation holds a luncheon for Veterans today. It includes a buffet lunch, entertainment and door prizes. It's free for veterans and $6 for non-veterans. You can register to attend by contacting the Miller Center and the Templeton Senior Center.

Appalachian Power will hold an open house today about the Wildwood Commerce Transmission Project. It will add three miles to transmission line and a substation to the power grid. The line will run from the current Jacksons Ferry-Pipers Gap line and end at business park in Galax. Construction is expected to take 12 months and will start when a customer is secured.

Patrick Henry Community College holds a healthcare career fair today. Nearly a dozen employers will be there, looking to hire certified nursing assistants, registered nurses, certified medical assistants and more. It runs from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. tonight.

The City of Danville and the Danville Urbanized Area Metropolitan Planning Organization want your input about bicycle and pedestrian safety. Input is wanted about how to make it safer and easier for biker and walkers to get around in the River District, including crosswalk improvements, bike lanes and connections to the river. The meeting starts at 4 p.m. at the Pepsi Building.

Kids at Carilion Children's Hospital will get a treat today as their favorite Sesame Street characters will visit today. The characters will spread joy to patients and their families. Sesame Street Live opens at the Salem Civic Center on Friday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that seven out of ten car seats are not properly installed. To get your car seat checked, go to the Blacksburg Fire Department today on Prices Fork Road between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. It's free and you do not need an appointment.

Central Virginia Community College holds an open house today with Virginia Technical Institute. The groups are working together to expand educational opportunities for students wanting to take part in skilled labor certification programs. The open house runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the main campus.

The Virginia Department of Veterans Services in Wytheville holds an open house today. Veterans will learn about assistance available to them and their families at the Wytheville Benefits Office.
