(NBC 4) - Hillary Clinton will address staff and supporters in New York City on Wednesday morning, hours after her shock defeat at the hands of Donald Trump.

The Democratic nominee for president will speak at the New Yorker hotel in midtown Manhattan Wednesday morning.

In the wee hours of the day, her campaign chairman John Podesta told supporters at her election watch party the counting was still going and that they should go home and get some rest.

It was only a few minutes later, though, that campaign sources acknowledged the former secretary of state and U.S. senator had called the real estate magnate and reality TV star to concede the election.

NBC News data showed Clinton was actually leading the Republican Trump in the nationwide popular vote by more than 130,000 votes, though he was ahead comfortably in the electoral college that ultimately decides the presidency.

Exit polls showed that Clinton did best with women, blacks and Hispanics, while Trump dominated among men and white voters.
