CATAWBA (WSLS 10) – Authorities say group of hikers has reported a brush fire at McAfee Knob in Roanoke County.

Jennifer Sexton, a spokesperson with Roanoke County Fire & Rescue, says crews were dispatched to fire near the summit.

“This is a difficult area to access and crews are using ATVs to shuttle crews and equipment,” said Sexton. “The area where the fire is located is very steep and rocky terrain and difficult to access.”

Officials say fire is small at this time, but with dry and breezy conditions that could change.

The fire area is on park service land, which means the U.S. Forest Service and the Virginia Department of Forestry have been notified. Their crews are expected to be en route soon.
